Y Plant Affricanaidd CIC successfully delivered a Child Protection Awareness and Parenting Support Programme for African families living in Aberdare and Newport between August and September 2025. The programme was created to support parents who face cultural, financial, and communication barriers, particularly those with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) and limited understanding of UK safeguarding systems.
The sessions focused on helping parents develop positive parenting skills, understand Welsh safeguarding expectations, strengthen parent–child relationships, and build confidence when engaging with schools, health services, and support agencies. Participants received a culturally adapted parenting toolkit, and sessions were supported by trained facilitators and volunteers.
A total of 18 parents benefited from the programme, supported by 5 volunteers. Evaluation results showed significant improvements in:
- Understanding of child protection laws and Early Help
- Confidence in communicating with schools and professionals
- Positive discipline strategies and emotional regulation
- Reduced stress and isolation
- Improved parent–child communication and household wellbeing
Parents shared powerful feedback, highlighting the value of a safe, culturally sensitive space where they could ask questions, express concerns, and learn without judgment. Many reported feeling more empowered, informed, and supported in their parenting journey.
This programme forms part of our wider commitment to supporting the Welsh Government Child Poverty Strategy, strengthening protective factors for African children, and providing early intervention for families at risk of financial hardship and social exclusion.
Y Plant Affricanaidd CIC will continue to expand this work across Welsh communities with significant African and Black British populations, including Newport, Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, and RCT. We remain dedicated to improving safety, well-being, and opportunity for African families across Wales.
